Iran Location and Provincial Division

In this post and the posts that will follow, I want to give some useful information about Iran as a country focusing on Iran Location and Provincial Division. Often, as I talk with travelers and people who want to come to Iran, I see that there are many misunderstandings and mistakes. Many resulting from the location of this country. That’s why I thought to write something about Iran explaining some points and clear some misunderstandings. Naturally, I cannot cover everything about Iran in one blog post. So, as mentioned, I will only discuss Iran location and provincial division in this post, and in other posts, I will write about other aspects of the country. For example, you can read more about the religions in Iran, the language, and the cuisine in other posts of our blog.

Where is Iran?

Iran is a country in the Middle East with 17 other countries such as Bahrain, Cyprus, Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Syria, and Turkey. Its neighboring countries are Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Turkmenistan in the north, Afghanistan, and Pakistan in the east, and Iraq and Turkey in the west. Below you can find Iran’s map showing its location in the world map taken from Google Maps which by the way is described to look like a seated cat. I don’t know if you see it or not, but if you look at the picture, on the left side of the Caspian Sea, the shape is similar to the head of a cat. If you want to have an adventure in Iran, you can check out Atour’s website.

On the other hand, Iran is also located in the Iran Plateau which makes it a mountainous country. Then, we have the Caspian Sea in the north and the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea in the south. Besides, there are also the jungles of north and west and the deserts of the central area. So, add two seas, one gulf, four mountain ranges, two main jungle belts, and two main desert  areas to a country and you have a four-season one with the possibility of a range of adventure and nature-related activities.

What makes it even more interesting is that in winter, you can go skiing in the north and then head south and enjoy the spring-like pleasant weather. Or in the summers when the south is burning hot, you can go to the north and enjoy the cool breeze. If nothing else, Iran can give you variety. If you like to experience traveling in the desert, don’t miss Iran desert tour .

Population and Provincial divisions

In the latest report of the Statistical Center of Iran, the country has 31 provinces. Each province has some districts and each district has some cities and villages. For example, Tehran Province has 16 districts and a total of 46 cities and 1047 villages and it is the Capital of Iran. Based on the same source, the population of Iran, on the day this post was written, was about 83.624.897.

Besides each province has a city that acts as its Center. For example, the city of Tehran is the center of Tehran Province, the city of Shiraz is the center of Fars Province, the city of Isfahan is the center of Isfahan Province and the city of Tabriz is the center of East Azerbaijan Province.

Since this is a post targeted at the tourists, I will also name the cities that have the greatest number of tourists. Perhaps, it helps you narrow down your destinations in Iran and know which cities to search for. Please note that they have an alphabetical order and are not based on the number of tourists.

  • Isfahan
  • Kashan
  • Kerman
  • Mashhad
  • Shiraz
  • Tabriz
  • Tehran
  • Yazd

Most of the mentioned cities have the possibility of cultural and adventure tourism including skiing, mountain trekking, desert trekking, rafting, and the likes. That’s it for the information I will be writing about in this post. Please subscribe to our website to read more about Iran and if you have any questions make sure to contact us.
